Trend Report for The Style Colum

Baz Luhrmann has certainly started something this season! With the release of his his remake of the classic film and novel The Great Gatsby due later this year, the roaring 20′s are already dominating the catwalk. Many of September’s Spring Summer shows took us back to the decade of the flappers, getting us all day dreaming of doing a cheeky charleston in a secret speak easy. Others gave a strong nod to the movement that was Art Deco with the use of architectural prints and structured silhouettes.
As usual, Art Deco prints underpinned Holly Fulton’s collection, brought up to date for the season in a modern palette of bright pink and blue. Similarly, Gucci looked to architectural buildings such as the famous Chrysler in NY as well as the film Metropolis, which inspired a fluid yet fitted collection with dropped waists, fringing and precisely symmetrical prints. Meanwhile Ralph Lauren looked to the more lady like women of F.Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel with an array of light silk numbers accessorised with small beaded bags and cloche hats. The revival of the Jazz Age is certainly upon us!
